Reframing a wall for a wardrobe install

Need some DIY assistance in the Southern Highlands? All sorts of projects pop up. Sometimes you just need a helping hand to get it over the line.

In this case the client had a massive wall to wall wardrobe that took up about 20% of the room space. It had to go! Being keen renovators they did the demo and removed it. Great job! Upon removal they discovered a couple of issues but weren’t quite sure how to proceed. 1) there was a chimney there 2) there was a big hole in the floor 3) how are we going to tackle this?

Renos are not like a new construction. There are often issues of rectification and making it work. Its also about transitions and a marriage of old and new. If we just put up a new wall, it would be exposed to freezing cold air from the under floor area. Not good. In this case, we decided to close off access to the cold, outside air. The client build a sub floor and sealed it with sprayfoam. We also decided to treat it like an external wall and insulated it.

Then we reframed the wall with the plan to accept some new Ikea wardrobes. This took a bit of time as we are working backwards. Normally, you would build the structure and then call the wardrobe people and they would custom make the wardrobes to fit the hole. That would have been very expensive, so we went with the economical option…Ikea!

Once completed, sheet the lot in Gyprock and prep for paint. Job done. Ready for the new Ikea wardrobes!
